Not Quite Jubbling Worthy Third Edition: Potted Plant Helmets, Potty Trained Pigs, Green VS Green, Koch Industries Is Not Jubbling

Stories that are not quite Jub-Worthy There are stories out there that merit the cycle of agonizing over our thoughts and limited writing abilities for four hours, and others that might be interesting but are just as well represented by a link. Here are those links.

  • Potted Plant Helmets Hit the Streets of Indonesia – Maybe this will pass in Indonesia but if I wore one of these plant helmets here in the US, I would probably get my ass kicked and I’d expect no less; eco-message or not. Treehugger.com
  • With solar power, it’s Green vs. Green – Solar power is renewable, creates jobs, brings tax revenue to cash starved, isolated towns and now faces opposition from the same groups they thought they were bros with. Sierra Club, Audubon Society and Natural Resources Defense Council step up to object mega solar projects. Reuters
  • Koch Industries Sues Prankster For Saying It Cares About Environment – This is classic. Koch Industries has every reason to be upset that some prankster soiled their questionable environmental record by issuing a fake press release in their name that they “remain committed to environmental responsibility and stewardship.” Personally, if somebody did the same thing to me and stated that I was handsome, romantic and a non-bedwetter, I’d stay quiet and hope that it stuck. • Taiwan wants pigs potty-trained to curb pollution – Farmer in Taiwan has potty trained his pigs and in turn cut waste runoff by 80%, increased their fertility by 20% and reduced the amount illness with his 10,000 pigs. [No comment] Yahoo! Green

Jubbling Case Study: Open Letter To Waste Management – Title Sponsor Of The 2011 Phoenix Open

Phoenix Open Golf Tournament TPC ScottsdaleEarth911.com posted an article about Waste Management’s efforts to “green up” this years Phoenix Open Golf Tournament. Last year, Waste Managements first as the title sponsor, they were able to encourage and reclaim 62% of the waste that was created during the week long event. And this year, they’re going even bigger by including BigBelly solar powered trash compactors, using kitchen collected greywater for use in the bathrooms etc. They’ll even have Recycling Ambassadors around the course to answer spectator questions about what is or isn’t recyclable – the one gig I wouldn’t want at this golf tournament.

Hooray for Waste Management and the 2011 Phoenix Open! What a great way to showcase your expanding waste disposal offerings.

But as Jubbling goes, I started thinking about this and wondered if I could help. Thinking out loud: “Last years Phoenix Open… 62% of the waste created was reclaimed… this year, you already have BigBelly solar powered trash compactors… I hope that thing floating in the toilet came from the kitchen and was not deposited by me.” And then it hit me – yes, I can help. Please accept this letter and be aware that I expect nothing in return. [Read more...]

Smart Meters Reveal Our Electricity Use When We Are Not Home

The NY Times Green Blog has an interesting article, An Energy Epiphany: Staying Home Is Cheap, about the author’s experience getting weekly feedback from his Smart Meter.

Smart MeterThanks to weekly email reports from his Smart Meter, NY Times Green Blog writer Clifford Krauss figures that nearly half of the electricity he consumes weekly is for appliances that are always plugged in and occurs whether he’s home or not. The refrigerator, electric clocks and stove all consume electricity throughout the day. And my guess is that a tv in standby mode, cable/satellite tuners that are constantly updating and power strips are also a draw. He discovered, after a vacation, that being home only cost him $2 more per day than being away. [Read more...]

Film “Con With The Wind” Questions Motivation Behind Wind Power Goldrush

“Con With The Wind” Official Trailer from Nick Brummitt on Vimeo.

Just when I have hope about a renewable energy source that will generate electricity day and night and works with those of us that are solar challenged, I hear about the movie Con With The Wind directed by Nigel Spence. I’m waiting to watch it but based on the trailer, Con With The Wind wants to show the environmental damage to land and animals caused by wind turbines during the installation process and also the negative effect of sound pollution. The film also focuses on organized crimes’ efforts worldwide to develop wind power farms as a method of laundering money and capturing a chunk of the government subsidies for creating renewable energy. Something we’re all paying for in the form of higher utility bills and taxes.

Is utility level wind power a good idea surrounded by bad people or just bad with bad? Con With The Wind wants you to believe it’s bad and bad and they’re not alone. I still have an open mind about wind generated power and turbines. That may be due to the fact that I don’t live in the shadow of one.

The Daily Show’s Take On San Francisco’s Law Banning McDonalds Happy Meal Toys

Inspiration for this post is from Grist.org

McDonalds Happy MealBack in November 2010, San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors voted for and approved a law that basically bans toys from McDonald’s Happy Meals as they are currently served (ie with fries and soda). It’s the city’s way of battling childhood obesity.

Under the law, McDonald’s and other restaurants will have until December 2011 to improve their meals’ nutrition by adding fruits and vegetables — if the chains want to keep offering toys, including those promoting the latest films. [CNN.com]

The Mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom, promised to veto the bill but since it was approved by a vote of 8 – 3, he does not have that power.

Personally, I don’t think a bill like this is necessary. If you don’t want your kids to eat Happy Meals then avoid McDonalds -have a backbone and say “no, I’m not getting you an over packaged Happy Meal with the cheap plastic toy that I will eventually step on repeatedly before I throw it into the garbage.” It’s called being a parent.

Here is the segment from The Daily Show that kind of nails it:

Where’s the Jubbling? The Jubbling is based on our ability to make choices to consume fewer resources (Happy Meal packaging, near-trash toy) and avoid food with little or no nutritional value. It’s not something that should be legislated.
