‘Intersex Fish Of The Lower Potomac’ Is Not A Reality Show. It’s A Reality.

Intersex smallmouth bassBack in 2003, a male smallmouth bass was caught in the south branch of the Potomac River that had both male and female parts – intersex. Since then, wildlife biologists have discovered that 50-100% of the fish in various tributaries leading into Chesapeake Bay have become intersex . Here’s a USGS explanation why fish become intersex:

“Intersex is one manifestation of endocrine disruption in fish. Endocrine disruption can result in adverse effects on the development of the brain and nervous system, the growth and function of the reproductive system, and the response to stressors in the environment. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists have documented the presence of endocrine disrupting contaminants in rivers and streams across the nation. Additionally, USGS scientists and others have demonstrated that exposure to endocrine-active contaminants can cause endocrine disruption, which can have ruinous impacts on fish populations.”

What’s causing the endocrine disruption is still a mystery. In addition to stormwater overflows loaded with sewage and pharmaceutical waste, pesticide pollution and manure with natural hormones from upstream farms are also considered a cause of the he-fish to he-she-fish transformations. There are currently two new bills in the Maryland House and Senate that would require farmers to better track what pesticides they’re using on their farms. [Washington Post]

Using Imported Water In A Water Feature Is Green Because The Sign Says It’s Green.

Town Square Las Vegas Using Imported Water In Water Feature. The geniuses that brought you the saying: “The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves” now bring you the “Town Square Las Vegas cares about the environment and the community. We use imported water in our water feature.” sign. The beatings/morale message was laughable. The environmentally clueless water feature sign… unfortunate. [Sociological Images via Boing Boing]

HTC Smartphone Is So Big That HTC Had To Give It A Little “Phone Call” Friendly Brother.

HTC Butterfly with HTC MiniDr. Evil would be so proud. In an effort to build the next big thing in smartphones, one manufacturer is now producing a “mini-me” version of itself in order to be more useful. It’s the Mini and HTC has added it as an accessory for the 5.5″ HTC Butterfly to make it more phoning-friendly. From Gizmag:

“The device (HTC Mini) connects to the Butterfly via Near Field Communication (NFC). It’s small, light, and could be dropped in a shirt pocket while the much larger Butterfly sits in a deeper pocket or purse.”

So here’s the recap: HTC built a phone that was too cumbersome to use as a phone so they built a separate phone to work with the original phone in order to be a more convenient phone. Makes me wonder if cutting out the middleman (HTC Butterfly) would be the best way to go. [Gizmag]

2.5 Million Kilograms Of CO2 Emitted Just Getting To Conference On Climate Change In Davos Switzerland.

Kloster Ski Resort at Davos SwitzerlandOne more screwed up example of “do as we say, not as we do” environmentalism. From Grist:

“The 2,630 attendees cumulatively traveled over 550,000 kilometers by plane; in doing so, they generated 2.47 million kilograms of carbon dioxide. 2,470 metric tons. Add in train travel — 57,860 more kilograms — and the total footprint for those jetting in to Davos is 2,520 metric tons of carbon dioxide.”

The Grist article points out that maybe we could excuse the carbon emissions created by world leaders and CEOs to attend the WEF Conference because their intentions, reducing the use of fossil fuels, are for the greater good. But I’m not buying it and I wouldn’t be surprised if a few attendees wore their ski boots to a meeting so they could cut out the middle step, changing, and go right to the slopes.

In a past career, I had to pick tradeshows to attend and the weather and location were very important factors. That’s why I wouldn’t be surprised if the primary motivation of leaders attending this conference was to expense a ski vacation in Switzerland and not tackling climate change. It’s hard to not be cynical but these kind of forums / events play right into the hands of FOX News. They’re chomping at the bit to show how hypocritical it is to host a conference on climate change that furthers climate change. [Grist]

Jilin’s Rime Ice and Snow Festival Includes A “Shoot Arrows At Live Roosters” Archery Booth.

Live roosters shot with arrows at Jilin Rime Ice Festival.Whether they’re consumed or not, using live roosters as targets is too much. The 20 year old Rime Ice and Snow Festival is an annual event that takes place near China’s largest ski resort and includes skiing, sledding and other wintertime activities. One of those activities is live-rooster archery and why it’s included is beyond me.

You could make the argument that the participants shooting arrows at live roosters strapped to ice are closer to their food than most people but sustenance isn’t the goal here – it’s live target practice and it’s just senseless and cruel. Hoax? I hope so. [RocketNews 24 (disturbing images)]

Like Putting A Turd In A Hot Dog Bun: The 638 HP VLP Destino Has Fisker Karma Body And Corvette Heart.

VLP Destino - Fisker Body, Corvette HeartWait a second, didn’t Fisker get a $500 million loan from the US Department of Energy to build more fuel efficient electric vehicles? It sucks to think that a good chunk of the millions they spent designing the Karma EV is now being utilized by the roided up and fuel inefficient VLP Destino.

The franken-muscle VLP Destino was developed by Gilbert Villareal and former Ford, Chrysler and GM executive (and Chevy Volt supporter) Bob Lutz and it pairs a Corvette engine with the Fisker Karma body. From Wired:

“Together, they’ve [Villareal and Lutz] struck a deal with Fisker to provide decontented ‘rollers’ of the Karma, sans the dinky four-cylinder engine, battery pack and electric motors. In their place, VLP has fitted one beast of a motor: the Corvette ZR1′s supercharged 6.2-liter V8, good for 638 hp and 604 lb-ft of torque. If that’s a bit much for your taste (or lack thereof), they’ll put in the Z06 ‘Vette’s 550-hp LS7, saving you about $20,000 in the process.”

Basically, they’re taking all that’s good about the Fisker Karma OUT and putting all that’s bad about consumption IN.

We have no choice but to mark this one down as a Jubbling shit sandwich. [Wired]
