Cardboard Prom Dress Is Much Better Than MY Cardboard Prom Date

Cardboard and paper bag prom dress. The kids today are so much savvier than we were and the cardboard prom dress is just one more example.

Missouri high school student Maura put together her dress for this year’s prom using all 3 layers of a corrugated cardboard box and paper bags. The top section of the dress is made out of cardboard that was first spray-painted and then glittered. The bottom part of the dress is made out of painted paper bags. Visit Everything Dresses for her previous handmade prom dresses including one that was crafted out of Dorito bags.

Maura’s prom dress last year was made out of pull-tabs and that got us thinking about a possible eHarmony Jubbling love connection… [BoingBoing] Pull Tab Phillies Shirt and Pull Tab Prom Dress

Upcycling 2-Liter Soda Bottle Into A Broom And More

DIY broom made out of 2-liter PET soda containersA friend of mine sent me a link to this article on a broom made out of empty 2-liter PET soda bottles. After an adult cuts the bottom off of the 2-liter bottles with an Exacto or similar knife, it seems like a neat idea that even kids could complete. The website Permaculture Ideas outlines how you build it.

The best part is that after your kids complete the project, they might be more apt to sweep with something they made versus using a store bought broom.

This upcycling plastic bottle broom project reminded me of the time we went camping and were swarmed by yellow-jackets. DIY Yellow Jacket Trap made from 2-Liter PET plastic bottle My daughter dismantled a 2-liter bottle and went to work making a yellow-jacket/wasp trap and she then baited it with the soda left in the bottle. Counting the yellow-jackets she caught became an activity. Sure the People for the Ethical Protection of Stinging Insects (PEPSI) would be opposed but it made the camping experience a lot more pleasant and safer.

Other useful products you can make from a 2-liter PET plastic bottle include a bird feeder and lawn sprinkler.

Simple DIY ideas like these make recycling solutions like shirts made out of PET plastic bottles seem a little over the top. But I guess making bottle-shirts from recycled plastic containers is better than the alternative of making them from new materials.

Philadelphia Phillies Fan Makes Shirt Out Of 3,000 Drink Tabs

Phillies fan makes a shirt out of 3000 drink tabs.Boy, the heckling he probably received from Philly fans might force him to follow the Mets. Then again, I don’t think they’re drink-tab shirt friendly either. [Buzzfeed]

Caine’s Arcade Video Has A Little Jubbling And A Lot Of Heart (Video)

YouTube Preview ImageYou have to watch this video on Caine’s Arcade. It’s the story of 9-year old Caine Monroy who built an arcade in his father’s auto parts shop out of used cardboard boxes, tape and tons of ingenuity. The video was made by Nirvan Mullick. I have a weird feeling this video is going to inspire quite a few kids to build their own arcade. [Treehugger]

Hopefully Resourcefulness Will Be The Next Big Fashion Statement

Use it up, wear it out - make it do!Good article on Boing Boing about resourcefulness and how it has become a lost art. Stuff is just cheaper to replace now so it doesn’t make sense to repair and re-wear. I’m guilty too as I catch myself throwing out possibly useful items (kids partial toys, holey clothing etc.) because it’s easier to toss and forget.

We should all challenge ourselves to repurpose and extend the life of one extra item each month; an article of clothing, a toy, or an electronic device. I do have to get rid of some underwear that are so old, they’re made out of tree bark. But besides chucking the undies (or using them as rags), I’m going try to patch and repair one normally trashed item each month. I already make a daily un-fashion statement so why not expand on it? Making A Thatched Roof Out Of Discarded Plastic Bottles

Dr. David Saiia - Making roofing material out of discarded plastic bottles.Duquesne University Professor Dr. David Saiia has developed a product that will reduce the amount discarded plastic bottles in Ecuador while putting a long-lasting, breathable roof over the head of rural farmers in that country. The hand-cranked machine works like an apple corer and turns an empty 3-liter plastic bottle into a single, 1-meter strip of plastic that is then flattened and attached to a piece of bamboo. Once the bamboo is full of plastic strips, it can be used as a Jubblinged roofing tile. According to Dr. Saiia, the plastic bottle roofing material should last 10-times longer than normal organic thatching. It’s estimated that it would take 1600 normally litter-bound plastic bottles to complete an average sized roof.

Is there a possible conflict with the Hug It Forward guys who built the school out of empty plastic bottles? Probably not. I’m sure there’s enough discarded plastic water bottles to go around. [Gizmodo]
