If Keystone XL Pipeline Is Approved, I’m Blaming LA Kings’ Coach Darryl Sutter.

Darryl Sutter - President ObamaI don’t follow NHL hockey much but if I did, my team would be the Vancouver Canucks. Now, assuming the Canucks were my team, and President Obama approved the Keystone XL pipeline project, the first shirt I would buy would say:

“My favorite team is the Vancouver Canucks. My second favorite team is whoever is playing the LA Kings.”

Why? Because yesterday, President Obama met with the two Los Angeles teams that won their respective league titles – MLS’s LA Galaxy and the NHL’s LA Kings – and one member of the party, LA King’s coach Darryl Sutter, wanted to lean on the Prez a little and talk about the Keystone XL pipeline. Alberta-born Darryl Sutter owns a 3000 acre ranch near Viking and he wants to see the pipeline get built. From The Globe and Mail:

“I’m gonna ask him about it – damn rights I am. It’s 20 feet underground. How can we not want to keep North America [energy self-sufficient]? Why does the border have to separate that? It doesn’t make sense. For sure, I’m going to ask him.”

I hope Coach Sutter wasn’t as successful with the President as his team was in the Stanley Cup finals – we don’t need Canada’s dirty tar sand oil.

So if by some miracle, President Obama decides against the KXL pipeline, I think there’s an opportunity for TransCanada to domestically refine their own tar sand oil in Alberta and they can do it on 3000 acres of land near the town of Viking. Sorry coach. [The Globe and Mail]

Republican Mayor Of Lancaster CA Wants To Require Solar Panels On Every New Home.

Solar Lancaster
Mayor of Lancaster California R. Rex ParrisWhat the what – Republican Mayor wants solar panels on every new home? It’s true. R. Rex Parris, the Mayor of Lancaster California, wants to institute a new requirement that all new homes built after January 1, 2014 must include solar panels. From Greentech:

“The purpose of the solar energy system standards is to encourage investment in solar energy on all parcels in the city, while providing guidelines for the installation of those systems that are consistent with the architectural and building standards of the City. It is further intended to provide standards and procedures for builders of new homes to install solar energy systems in an effort to achieve greater usage of alternative energy.”

Those damn treehugging Republicans! Why can’t they stay out of renewable energy and stick to advocating fossil fuels so it’s easier to paint them as the enemy? I think this quote from Mayor Parris answers that question:

“[Mayor Parris noted that Lancaster is] one of the most conservative Republican districts in the country. But Republicans are smart,” he said. “When you show them a solution, they will take it.”

So it’s smart to move to solar; it doesn’t have to be green. [Greentech]

Chicago’s Parking Meters Will Charge $6.50/Hour In 2013. Chicagoans Should ‘Stick It To The Man’ By Using Mass Transit Instead.

Parking meter in Chicago.I know I’m not the only one who hates driving into the big city only to be tethered to a parking meter. Parking meters remind us each time that we should’ve taken the bus, subway or train. If the parking rates are reasonable, we look past the inconvenience and continue to drive into the city.

Chicago is different. Currently, their downtown parking meter rates are the highest in the country at $5.75/hour and they’re going up in 2013 to $6.50/hour. The city is not benefiting by the increased rates but Jubbling will. Hopefully the new higher rates will discourage more people from driving into downtown Chicago and encourage them to travel by bus or train. [CBS Chicago]

The Inconvenient Truth Is That You Probably Didn’t Vote For Jill Stein.

President Barack ObamaWith this election, we could’ve sent a message to our President that climate change was an important issue but instead, we chose the rock star over the bazillionaire. Neither of the two main candidates wanted to bring up climate change – even a Presidential debate moderator, guided by unseen forces, poked fun at all “you climate change people” and basically pointed out that it’s the economy, stupid. [Wonder how those words will play out in 25 years.]

Hopefully a re-elected President Obama will not forget about the environment in his next four years the way he avoided it at the end of his first term. The normal treehuggers gave him a pass in this election, instead of promoting Jill Stein’s candidacy, because they considered him the least objectionable. Probably not a good position to take but it’s up to the voters to decide.

So congratulations to President Obama. This is it and I hope your final term is about making tough decisions in regard to climate change that will benefit your children and future grandchildren rather than focusing on getting future nominees from your party elected. You don’t have to be a rock star anymore; you just need to be a leader on an issue that is much bigger than any election.

Apple And EPEAT Reconciliation Cemented With The Gift Of Gold.

Gaddafi vs Retina MacBook ProSince the release of the Retina MacBook Pro this summer, EPEAT and Apple Computer’s relationship has been a tumultuous one. First they breakup then they makeup and now comes news that the Retina MacBook Pro has received a gold rating on EPEAT’s registry. With a gold rating, the Retina MacBook Pro is considered an “environmentally preferable product” allowing the Federal government, which requires that 95% of their purchases meet this standard, to start buying up the Retina MacBook Pro. How did this happen? Didn’t iFixit refer to the Retina MBP as “Unfixable, Unhackable, Untenable.”?

Wired.com posted a great article, from the perspective of iFixit’s CEO Kyle Wiens, about the EPEAT’s epic caving and how it’ll compromise the registry that encourages more sustainable manufacturing and recyclable products. [Wired]

Don’t Hate On Young Conservatives For Energy Reform. Encourage Them.

Just read a skeptical article about Young Conservatives For Energy Reform (YC4ER) on Climate Denial Crock of the Week. And judging by the early comments, you’ll get the expected haters and a little I told you so.

My take is that if you truly identify yourself as an environmentalist who believes in climate change, you would encourage YC4ER’s efforts. No, you don’t have to agree with everything the YC4ER support and no they don’t wear hemp clothing adorned with peace signs but you do need these suit wearers on your side. They’re conservatives who believe in climate change which fortunately puts them to the left of Jim Inhofe. [CDCW]
