Orbea bicycles are expensive. Their new Grow series for kids is also expensive but will partially counter the high price by adjusting, expanding and growing with our kids. So far, Orbea has a pedal-less Grow 0 model for 1.5 – 4 year olds, the Grow 1 bicycle for 2.5 – 5 year olds, and the Grow 2 models for 4 – 9 year olds that comes in geared (7V) and un-geared (1V) versions. With the Grow 1 & 2, you can adjust the frame length plus the seat and handlebar height.

Although their price is on the high side, $235 (Grow 0) to $340 (Grow 2-7V), all Orbea bikes come standard with a lifetime warranty which will come in handy if you only have one kid now but are planning on having 5 or more. [Treehugger.com]

K-Tor Pocket Socket And Power Box

K-Tor Power Box ChargerPortable chargers like K-Tor’s Pocket Socket ($49) and Power Box ($150) are simple ideas that are packed with awesomeness.

K-Tor Pocket Socket RechargerThe Pocket Socket’s is a hand-crank generator with a max output of 10w and is targeted toward emergency charging of cellphones, portable lighting etc. The collapsible and portable Power Box is a pedal-powered generator that produces up to 20w of power; enough to re-charge a laptop, tablet and of course, cellphones.

I’d like the see a video of K-Tor’s Power Box in use. If it’s not too loud, it could be the perfect product for anyone looking to sneak in a little exercise while they charge and work on their laptop. [GizMag]

Carbon Neutral Indoor Ski Resort Makes Everything Else Carbon Neutral Suck More

Ok, we survived Seattle’s Snowmageddon last week but Jubbling.com had to suffer another post-free week. Of course I blame my kids for this and will now find a way to put them to work furthering the Jubbling cause.
Proposed Carbon Neutral Indoor Ski Resort in Barcelona
What did we miss? How about the proposed indoor carbon neutral ski resort that is planned for 2015 in Barcelona Spain. Yes, they need snow because it’s not available year round and to appease and appeal to the green folks, they’ll make it carbon neutral by using the cool energy that is generated when sub-zero liquefied natural gas is converted back to its gaseous state. In addition to the converted natural gas, the indoor ski resort will use solar and plant waste to power the facility. Dutch company SnowWorld, builder’s of Dubai’s indoor Ski Dubai, will be construct the facility in partnership with B01 Arquitectes of Barcelona.

Jubbling’s take: Nature defying projects like this kill us. Yes, they are making an effort to consume less resources and we normally see good in those kind of efforts. But this “tickle and slap” faux environmental-sensitivity drives us nuts! Save the layer of green paint, take a step back and just admire the amount of sucking that goes into a project like an indoor ski resort built in a city that most people want to escape to during the winter months. Instead of figuring out how to build it, they should really wonder why. [Treehugger.com]

New Protected Bike Lane In Chicago Brings Out Bicycle Commuters

Protected bicycle lane Chicago

We de-industrialize, and start riding bicycles, and China gets all the new factories and starts driving cars.
Comment on FastCoExist

FastCoExist.com posted an article about the increased number of bicycle commuters in Downtown Chicago thanks to the addition of protected bike lanes. Not just painted bike lanes but ones that are separated from car traffic by pylons, planters or parking spaces. It’s all part of a plan put forth by new Mayor Rahm Emanuel and his Department of Transportation staff. The department studied the positive effect of a half-mile protected lane on Chicago’s Kinzie Street and found that bike ridership was up 55% along that section.

Mr. Emmanuel is also noted for requiring all car commuting city employees to get to work via mass transit starting in 2012.

Magnificent Revolution Wants You To Pedal To Earn Your Entertainment

Magnificent RevolutionStarted back in 2007, Adam Walker’s Magnificent Revolution wants to challenge us to think about and make a connection to the electricity we consume. It’s always available when we need it but what does it really take to generate? Their traveling Magnificent Cycle Cinema offers an outdoor movie in exchange for your pedaling. Eight riders on stationery bikes will create enough power to drive a 4000 lumen projector and deliver 500 watts of audio. Easily enough brightness and sound to support an audience of up to 50.

The Sol Cinema - Solar Powered Movie HouseThe connection between active pedal power and electricity generation is key to Magnificent Revolution’s message. The solar powered Sol Cinema also shows movies to up to 8 people but passively collects power through solar panels.

Hopefully Magnificent Revolution can reach the right audience. Not the audience that is aware of their energy consumption and what it takes to generate but the folks who don’t know and with Mag Rev’s help, may be able to connect the dots. Check out their website for more information on MR’s involvement in schools and their bicycle power generating solutions. [SmartPlanet]

Reality Sucks Advertisement From General Motors

General Motor’s Reality Sucks ad showing the cyclist shielding his face in embarrassment for cycling instead of driving is pretty funny. What isn’t captured or explained in the ad is that the cyclist is wearing crotchless biking pants and the woman in the car is his mother. So don’t get upset cyclists, here’s your motivation to bike more and you can thank General Motors for that. Stop Pedaling and Start Driving Advertisement From General Motors
