A Jubbling Holiday Break

Before and After: Westlake Christmas Tree In SeattleWe’re back again and we hope everyone had a great holiday and were able to purchase more locally this year. In our house, this was the first Christmas my daughter got presents for everyone in the family and it was great. Her and her friend made their gifts out of sea glass and rocks and also purchased a few. Grey Skull Cap Mom got flowers, I got a grey skull cap and little brother got a stuffed duck that turned out to be on of his favorite gifts.

While I was praising my daughter about what a great job she did picking out gifts, including the grey skull cap I was wearing, I brought up how much her brother loved his stuffed duck. She was very proud to tell me how the duck only cost $.99 so I had to ask her where she bought it and she felt even prouder when she told me it came from Goodwill. I have to admit that I cringed a little as I watched him hug the heck out of his new stuffed buddy knowing that it went through so many hands and who knows what so I made the “ewww” face. That’s when she reached the pinnacle of pride and with a smile told me it was the same price she paid for the hat I was wearing and that it also came from Goodwill.

Happy New Year and welcome back.

Buy Less Stuff And Try To Spend Locally On Your Kids This Christmas

Jubbling Christmas List
Each holiday, we all receive an onslaught of emails encouraging us to buy most of our gifts close to home. It’s a great goal but unfortunately, most of the stuff our kids ask for say “Made By Small Hands In Foreign Lands” and we normally go that route. I know I do and when I look at my kids’ Christmas list this year, 90% of it is made somewhere outside of North America. So this year, my goal is to spend more locally than previous years.

What can you give your kids that is locally produced? A great gift you can give is your time. Deliver it on Christmas morning as a ‘coupon’ and then let each kid choose what they want to do and make a day of it. They may choose to go to a local aquarium, skating rink, sporting event and then follow it up with a meal at a local restaurant. It might be something you would’ve done together anyway but now it’s your kid choosing what they want to do and it’s local.

Yes, you’ll still buy the stuff they want but by giving your time, you can buy less of it.
