We wrote about repurposing wood pallets for wedding tables in our post “And I Pronounce You Jubbling” back in 2011. Here are so more ideas from RenewPurpose that don’t require instructions; viewing the final repurposed pallet-product and adding a little stain or paint is all you need to duplicate these ideas. If you get a chance, check out their iDevice cases and handbags made from repurposed tire rubber. Pretty cool stuff. [RenewPurpose via Good]

Tiny Closet-Sized, Coffin Apartments In Japan Prove Once Again That Kramer Was Ahead Of His Time.

Geki-Sema (Super Small) Share House in Tokyo. This closet-sized apartment in space-limited Tokyo rents for $600/month. At its deepest, it has approx 8 ft of living space and just enough room for a bed and some belongings.

The apartments are just used for sleeping by young professionals working in the Shibuya district in Tokyo. On the plus side, residents of these coffin apartments won’t be expected to host any functions.

Cosmo Kramer from Seinfeld might’ve been onto something: we now have the closet apartment – maybe the dresser apartment is next. [Inhabitat]

Republican Mayor Of Lancaster CA Wants To Require Solar Panels On Every New Home.

Solar Lancaster
Mayor of Lancaster California R. Rex ParrisWhat the what – Republican Mayor wants solar panels on every new home? It’s true. R. Rex Parris, the Mayor of Lancaster California, wants to institute a new requirement that all new homes built after January 1, 2014 must include solar panels. From Greentech:

“The purpose of the solar energy system standards is to encourage investment in solar energy on all parcels in the city, while providing guidelines for the installation of those systems that are consistent with the architectural and building standards of the City. It is further intended to provide standards and procedures for builders of new homes to install solar energy systems in an effort to achieve greater usage of alternative energy.”

Those damn treehugging Republicans! Why can’t they stay out of renewable energy and stick to advocating fossil fuels so it’s easier to paint them as the enemy? I think this quote from Mayor Parris answers that question:

“[Mayor Parris noted that Lancaster is] one of the most conservative Republican districts in the country. But Republicans are smart,” he said. “When you show them a solution, they will take it.”

So it’s smart to move to solar; it doesn’t have to be green. [Greentech]

Clotheslines Season Is Around The Corner. Check Out The Clotheslines Of 1930’s New York.

Clotheslines on laundry day in 1930's New YorkBuzzfeed posted “Monday, Laundry Day, New York City” and it was a nice reminder that clothesline season is almost here. My indoor clothesline has been working overtime this winter. I wash and hang a load on plastic coat hangers in the morning and then repeat the wash and hang process one more time in the evening.

If you’re chomping at the bit and can’t wait for clothesline season, hang-dry your clothes indoors by purchasing an adjustable closet rod and a pair of wall brackets to hang your laundry over your washer/dryer. Your bathroom shower rod will work too.

If you’re an anxious planner and can’t wait to get your outdoor clothesline set up, you can invest in an outdoor umbrella clothesline or get real old school and tie a rope/phone cord between to posts/trees.

From my experience, wooden clothespins work the best on outdoor clothesline. Plastic clothespins become brittle from the temperature change of daytime heat and cool evenings.

Good luck with clothesline season. Remember: clotheslines are the easy-to-install, affordable solar panel system. [Buzzfeed]

Bullfrog Mousetraps?

Bullfrogs eat everything - National GeographicMy garage has a mouse problem and the mice are winning. Out of four attempts, the mice have nibbled around my peanut butter baited trap without ever releasing it. They’ve even left behind some potty business that looked like it spelled out their preference for chunky peanut butter.

I won’t go the poison or the sticky trap route and I’ve tried the furry-friendly method of capturing mice in a bucket after they walk the baited plank but they keep brazenly coming back. I swear one of the little buggers, after I released it, gave me the finger and squeaked out a “Sucker!

Time to bring in the bullfrogs. Can’t think of a more Jubbling way to get rid of the mice and a couple dozen spiders. [Laughing Squid]

Sinkhole In Florida Consumes A Man And His Bedroom.

Sinkhole in Florida swallows a man and his bedroom.Scary stuff. A 30′ sinkhole opened up under a house in Florida last night and swallowed an entire bedroom and one person who is presumed dead. From the Guardian:

“A Florida man screamed for help and disappeared as a large sinkhole opened up under the bedroom of a house, his brother said on Friday. The brother told rescue crews he heard a loud crash near midnight on Thursday, then heard his brother screaming. “When he got there, there was no bedroom left,” the Hillsborough county fire rescue spokeswoman Jessica Damico said. “There was no furniture. All he saw was a piece of the mattress sticking up.”

Sinkholes occur naturally but land development (construction, heavy water retention ponds) and new water-diversion systems (lowering the water table, runoff etc.) may contribute to the process. [Guardian via Gizmodo]
