Are We Being Dongs Again? The US, China And 24 Other Countries Refuse To Comply With European Union Airline Pollution Control Plan

airline emissionsThis is one of those posts where the title almost says it all. Here’s some info to help fill in a the gaps:

  • The European Union (EU) wants to address the issue of reducing airline emissions and greenhouse gases immediately.
  • The EU created a plan.
  • The US, China and 24 other nations don’t like the plan.
  • The US, China and 24 other nations want to work with the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to create a plan.
  • The EU thinks the US, China and 24 other nations are dragging their feet by waiting for ICAO to develop a plan.
  • The US House of Representatives passed a bill telling US airlines that they don’t have to abide by the EU plan.

Jubbling wishes we were on a plan. [NYTimes.com]

The Dumbest Smart Guy In Germany Is Piloting e-volo’s Battery Powered Multicopter.

YouTube Preview ImageGerman company e-volo demonstrated their battery powered Multicopter by having one of its creators, Thomas Senkel, pilot it. The Multicopter is very Macgyverish and e-volo’s hopes it will become a battery/hybrid powered device anyone can purchase and that piloting it would be “as simple as a car.” Besides the music, the craziest part in the video is when Mr. Senkel puts on a helmet as his sole protection from the 16 spinning propellers. Obviously, having an open casket funeral is important to him. [Gizmag]

GreenFest Is Coming To A City Relatively Close To You

GreenFest Green FestivalThe Green Festival, or GreenFest, is a two day event that showcases products, ideas and solutions for consuming less and reusing more. And this year, they’re celebrating their 10th anniversary having welcomed 1 million attendees. Yes, green is prominent in their name but you don’t feel Jubwinked by attending because it’s all about the vendors. If you do decide to go, definitely bring your kids too. GreenFest is very kid friendly and includes a KidZone with crafts, games and featured speakers who’ll explain ways that kids can get involved. Here is their upcoming schedule:

2011 Green Festival Schedule
San Francisco/SF Concourse April 9-10
Chicago/McCormick Place May 14-15
Seattle/Qwest Exhibition Center May 20-21
New York/Javits Building Oct 1-2
Los Angeles/LA Convention Center Oct 29-30
San Francisco/SF Concourse Nov 12-13

Now Jubbling Festival, or JubFest, is still about 3 – 20 years off but I’m working on it. For now, it occurs in my house daily and consists of me walking around in a parka telling my kids to turn stuff off.

Ocean, Air and Auto: Slow Down And Save

Slowing down ocean freight could cut up to 30% in fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Slowing down ocean freight could cut up to 30% in fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

The NY Times has an interesting article about the positive impact slowing down will have on the bottomline and environment with ocean freight, air and auto travel. Saving money with reduced fuel consumption which in turn reduces CO2 emissions. Now, the problem is getting everyone to buy into the “slow down” idea. Full article @ NY Times

Neon Green ‘Soular’ Backpacks and Piggy-Backpacks

Neon Green Piggyback Soular BackpackBased on Neon Green‘s own specs, you should be able to extend the standby time of your cellphone by a couple hours using their product and maybe that would be enough. Their new Capsoul 3-in-1 backpack and Piggyback Soular backpack use a thin-film solar panel that produces 11.1V of output in full sunlight and stores the generated power into a rechargeable Piggy Power Bank (also from Neon Green). Both packs will charge in artificial lighting but at a lower rate. The Piggyback Soular model may find greater acceptance because it will attach to your current laptop-specific backpack or hiking pack and it will also work as a standalone shoulder bag. It should be emphasized, Neon Green’s soular packs are about phone charging in a pinch and not much more.

No word on when these bags will be out. [Gizmodo, Crunchgear, Neon Green/Scratch Tracks]

Carbon Offsets = Environmental Penance?

“Take only pictures, leave only footprints.”

That suggestion is the motto of the Sierra Club and has been their hallmark philosophy on how to reduce man’s impact on nature, mainly parklands, for numerous decades. It is simple, inexpensive and conducive to extending the lifespan of parks for future generations…and it’s Jubbling at the core.

That idea was contemporized and tweaked to produce the carbon footprint philosophy. As defined by Merriam-Webster.com, a carbon footprint is “the negative impact that something (as a person or business) has on the environment; specifically: the amount of carbon emitted by something during a given period.” That term dates back to 1999.

The Carbon Offset Confessional

Environmental Penance Kiosk

Now with ten years of consumer guilt and the perceived corpulent western lifestyle under our belt we arrive at carbon offset credits. Carbon offset’s are defined as “… credits for an amount of carbon dioxide-equivalent (COse) reduced, avoided or absorbed. Many types of credits are available, produced by several schemes or mechanisms and with a series of sometimes overlapping standards.”

We’re all about reducing, reusing and recycling but carbon offset credits sound more like an environmental penance for all of your past earth-bashing sins. Jubbling is about making smarter personal choices and changes that work for you. It’s not about paying a broad ransom, of sorts, to some faceless entity and then going about your business as usual. It’s also not about guilt for living your daily life.

Can you really take carbon credits seriously when the company Bombardier Learjet has a carbon offset program? Should you be riddled with guilt if you owned a 1970s muscle car from Detroit? We argue that the car is less of a black eye to Mother Nature versus a private jet.

Carbon credits are being sold on an idea that says we can essentially pay off our poor environmental habits or abuses while still continuing along without sacrifice or concern. This hypocrisy is making nations and individuals wealthy while the real problems are ignored.
