Rescued Puppy Mill Dog Takes Its First Steps On Grass.

Rescued puppy mill dog Lizzy takes her first steps. From the “Puppy Mill Dog – Walks On Grass For The First Time” YouTube description:

“Lizzy spent 12 long years living in a small cage in a puppy mill. She never once touched the ground. National Mill Dog Rescue rescued her early in March 2013 and she immediately went to a loving home. This video shows her in the grass for the very first time. Prepare yourself for tears of joy!

Help us not post anymore videos like this by avoiding puppy mill dogs. Here are some tips for staying clear of puppy mill dogs from Cesar’sWay:

  • Avoid pet stores, newspaper ads, and great deals online!
Many puppy mills supply local pet stores with false information. Remember Bandit from Season 2 of The Dog Whisperer? His website said that he was from a licensed breeder, but he turned out to be the product of a puppy mill, costing his new family thousands of dollars in vet bills and heartache over his life-threatening health and behavioral problems.
  • Visit the breeder and ask questions!
Ask to see the entire facility where the dogs are bred and kept. Is it clean? Spacious enough? Ask to see the parent dogs as well. Does the breeder show hesitation to let you see the facility or to let you meet the other dogs who are being kept there? Or is the breeder willing to just sell one of his puppies to anyone who walks in off the street, sight unseen? Reputable breeders will want to make sure their puppies are going to good homes.
  • Adopt from a shelter or rescue instead!
This is the safest solution. Rescues and shelters most often have the best interest of the animal at heart, and many of them are last chance adoptions. But remember: don’t adopt out of pity! Adopt based on your energy level and compatibility!

Post Hurricane Sandy Real Estate Deals: ‘The Great Sandy Sell-Off’ Video.

“If the storm was just isolated to Rockaway, I would understand the fear. But this wasn’t isolated to Rockaway – this happened throughout all 5 boroughs [of New York] and I think that’s why people feel this isn’t going to happen again. This was the perfect storm.”
Lisa Jackson, Rockaway Properties

Yes, the damaged homes of Rockaway are selling at a discount but what do you do when the ‘Perfect Storm’ becomes an annual event? Deal or not, I can’t understand why home buyers would actively seek out homes that not only suffered significant damage but are still in harm’s way. Oh wait, I found an old Far Side comic that explains it:

Brick And Mortar 2.0: Austrailian Retail Store Charges $5 To Look. Deducts It From What You Buy.

Just looking fee sign in Celiac Supplies' storefront window.Online shopping has a new enemy and it’s not an internet sales tax. The window sign above was created by the owner of Celiac Supplies, Georgina, and it’s in response to the “showrooming” and the “just looking” shoppers that visit her store and purchase from her competitors. From Georgina [Adelaide Now]:

“I’ve had a gut full of working and not getting paid. I can tell straight away who are the rat bags who are going to come in here and pick my brain and disappear.”

I get her frustration but it sounds like a little people repellant might be chasing the customers away too.

Moving to retail vs online: is showrooming and purchasing online more Jubbling? Can ‘sort of’ be our answer? [Adelaide Now via Laughing Squid]

  • Now living in a home that has a grid-tied PV system that supplies about 95% of the energy.
  • Drives a Chevy Volt plug-in.

LightHawk | Volunteer Pilots Donating Flights to Elevate ConservationAnother way Rudy is Jubbling is by leading LightHawk.org – an organization that pairs conservationists, who need a bird’s eye-view, with pilots willing to donate flight time. From LightHawk.org:

“LightHawk provides flight as a tool to protect land, water and wildlife in the U.S., Mexico, Central America and parts of Canada.”

Corrosive Concrete Halts Construction Of Second Tallest Building In The World.

Ping'an International Finance Center
Ping'an International Finance CenterIt’s probably too late to reconsider constructing the 660m, 116-story Ping’an International Finance Center so hopefully they can get it right. What’s halting construction? It turns out that several contractors supplying concrete to the project may have been using unprocessed sea sand in their mix which over time, could compromise the stability of the future 2nd tallest building in the world and the tallest building in China. From Dezeen:

“While cheap sea sand offers cost-saving opportunities for contractors, the salt and chloride present in it can corrode steel reinforcements over time and ultimately cause a building to collapse.”

With the delays and the possible added cost of removing and replacing all of the skunk-concrete, maybe the developers will stop at 58 stories and cut their losses. The Ping’an International Finance Center was only going to be the second tallest skyscraper in the world anyways. [Dezeen via Inhabitat]
