Home Energy Efficiency (1993 vs 2009): Homes Are More Efficient, Gadgets/Electronics More Prevalent.

Home Energy Consumption chart from the EIAI think this home energy consumption chart shows what we call a hug-punch or a tickle-slap – homes are more efficient through weatherization [the hug] but we’re eating up those savings with our appliances, gadgets and electronics [the punch]. According to an article on Greentech, homes built between 2000-2009 were 30% larger than previous years and yet home energy consumption has stayed pretty much flat. We must be buying a shitload of appliances, gadgets and electronics because Energy Star can’t save us.

Even as we move towards efficient home appliances, we seem to be over complicating it. We posted a story about WiFi controlled LED lighting system that allowed homeowners to remotely control their lights via a remote, iDevice app and required a separate router. It’s the hardware stupid! Since most of us have mastered the on/off switch – use it and skip the energy consuming gadgets in order to truly save electricity. [Greentech Media]

HTC Smartphone Is So Big That HTC Had To Give It A Little “Phone Call” Friendly Brother.

HTC Butterfly with HTC MiniDr. Evil would be so proud. In an effort to build the next big thing in smartphones, one manufacturer is now producing a “mini-me” version of itself in order to be more useful. It’s the Mini and HTC has added it as an accessory for the 5.5″ HTC Butterfly to make it more phoning-friendly. From Gizmag:

“The device (HTC Mini) connects to the Butterfly via Near Field Communication (NFC). It’s small, light, and could be dropped in a shirt pocket while the much larger Butterfly sits in a deeper pocket or purse.”

So here’s the recap: HTC built a phone that was too cumbersome to use as a phone so they built a separate phone to work with the original phone in order to be a more convenient phone. Makes me wonder if cutting out the middleman (HTC Butterfly) would be the best way to go. [Gizmag]

Not Much To See Here… Just A Samsung T9000 Refrigerator With An Unnecessary 10-Inch LCD On It.

Samsung T9000 RefrigeratorInstead of focusing on how, maybe Samsung could’ve spent more time thinking about why would anyone need a 10″ LCD touchscreen on their refrigerator. It’s the brand new Samsung T9000 (no relation to the Cyberdyne T1000) and one of its options is an internet connected 10″ LCD touchscreen. Now I could be kicked until I agreed that the 10″ LCD was remotely useful for following recipes and building shopping lists but photo sharing and accessing apps on an unmovable fridge? Don’t we already have enough portable devices that do the same thing? [Gizmag]

Peel-And-Stick Solar Cells Could Generate Renewable Power On Everything And Everyone.

Stanford University: Peel and Stick thin film solar cells.Researchers at Stanford University have developed a way to produce ultra-thin solar cells that can be peeled and applied to a variety of surfaces including cell phones, windows etc. From e360:

“Normally, thin-film solar cells are attached to rigid, often heavy, silicon and glass substrates because most unconventional surfaces aren’t compatible with the thermal and chemical processes involved in producing the cells. The new process gets around that challenge, the scientists say, because it does not require any fabrication to occur on the final substrate surface. Instead, it involves pressing an ultra-thin film of nickel, a silicon/silicon dioxide wafer, and a protective polymer into a “sandwich,” and then attaching a layer of thermal release tape. When dipped in room-temperature water, the thin-film solar cell can be peeled from the original wafer and attached to a wide range of surfaces, from window glass to cellphones.”

Depending on how the solar power is transferred and stored by the host, the applications of the Peel-and-Stick solar cell technology are endless.

Don’t Be A Sucker By Purchasing An 8 Million Pixel TV With 7 Million Pixels You Can’t See.

Sharp ICC Purios 60-inch 4K LCD TVSharp just announced the release of their new 4K ICC Purios that will sell for $31,000. It’s a 60″ diagonal LCD TV that reaches the 4K mark by displaying a 3840 x 2160 resolution – just over 8 million pixels.

So you have $31k burning a hole in your pocket – should you buy a TV with 8 million pixels? NO and don’t let the sales puke at the electronics store talk you into it. You’re better off extending the life of your current TV rather than upgrading to a 4K model with 7 million pixels you won’t be able to see.

The MeterPlug Tracks How Much Electricity You Consume By Appliance.

The MeterPlug app screenshot.The MeterPlug is an energy tracking adapter that sits in between an electrical outlet and your appliances. Once connected, the MeterPlug lets you monitor your appliance’s power consumption data in real time and gives you the ability to turn off appliances that are not in use via the MeterPlug app. Using the app, the makers of the MeterPlug determined that a 50″ Sony LED TV consumed a nutty $18.25 worth of electricity in standby mode.
